The Studio

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and in this natural space, both you and the wheel can be at one.

Blackjack Studio Pottery, previously The Potter's Shed, was founded in 1983 by Lim Meng Khuang. The key distinguishable characteristic of the studio since its inception has always been the studio's location. Great care is always taken to create an environment that is inspiring and conducive for creative work, and the current space is nestled amongst the lush greenery off the fringes of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

Various types of clay and a wide range of glaze are available, providing you with all you need to create a piece that best expresses yourself. Each piece you create is unique, and the warmth that every object handmade by you brings to the table, is indescribable.

Lim Meng Khuang

Lim Meng Khuang is an educator and a ceramic artist with more than 30 years of teaching experience. A Bachelor of Arts (Honours) graduate in ceramics, he has previously taught at La Salle Art College and the National University of Singapore’s Extra-mural Studies Department.

With a passion for clay and an inquisitive and adventurous mindset, he is constantly exploring new ways of expression through research and experiment. His inspiration for various shapes, textures and forms are often initiated by nature and architectural designs in the environment. Most of Meng Khuang’s pieces have been deliberately manipulated to give unexpected shapes. Partially glazed wares, sometimes with as many as three overlapping glazes, are his specialty.

Known also to many as a kiln engineer, Meng Khuang has a deep interest and understanding in the techniques of firing and has made a study of kiln conditions for obtaining particular results.

Karen Ng

Karen has found passion in teaching ceramics for many years. She derives great satisfaction by sharing her experience and skills with her students and seeing each of them develop their unique style. Karen’s creativity stems from the concept of balancing space in form and design for each piece of her work.
